♆ Character Development

Play with water and you might drown get wet.

Cye is generally nice and prefers to solve conflicts without fighting. Like water, he can be calm and still, but strong when pushed. He joins the other ronin in the battle against Talpa to save the world, keeping his temper in check while Ryo and Kento took a more rash approach.

After Talpa was defeated and the world was saved, the initial legend of the Ronin Warriors was fulfilled. Cye and the others lived through a period of peace that was only briefly interrupted by a mad scientist and the wizard Shikasen. They could be seen as general villains who happened to come across the power of the armor, rather than baddies who were specifically after the armor. This is a contrast with Mukala, who had the black armor, which drove him to pick a fight with Ryo, who had the white armor.

I think that all of this was related to how Cye reacted in the black armor ova. This is one of the parts of the story where he receives the most character development. He seemed to go with the flow up to this point, when he finally refused to fight. The legend had been fulfilled, the ronin's destinies had been accomplished and it looked like they could live in peace after Talpa's second and definitive defeat.

Yet it turned out that because they had magical armor, the ronin might still end up fighting other villains who were attracted by the power of the armor, even if they're not related directly to the armor. That broke the notion of peace that Cye probably formed in his mind and perhaps made him consider that the fight wasn't over just because the legend was taken care of. Then finally, his nightmare came true, another battle with someone who had link to the armor, the fight was not only not over, but it was big and it was theirs.

Ryo's red wildfire armor wasn't enough to stand up against Mukala's black armor, he needed the white armor of inferno. To summon it, the other ronin must lend him their power, which meant that without Cye, or any of the others, Ryo couldn't use the white armor. Because the white armor drained power from his friends, Ryo felt guilty about using it, even if it was the only choice during the later battles against Talpa. Cye must have been quietly aware of this.

During the fight with Mukala, Cye froze up and couldn't give his power to Ryo, but this is not because he didn't care about Ryo. I believe that Cye was worried for Ryo and the others, because they were being dragged into more battles. Fighting meant that they would have to deal with all the dangers and complications of enemies with supernatural powers and not fighting wasn't a choice when those supernatural powered enemies were out to kill them anyway. Cye realized that he couldn't truly win, none of the ronin could, and that frustrated and worried him.

The other ronin accepted the new battle more easily and fought because they had to, not questioning it beyond that. How was it fair that they had to deal with all these problems, would they ever live in peace? They simply reacted, having no time to ask those questions, but Cye couldn't help it but to wonder. He was clearly upset when the other ronin, including the one who is likely his closest friend among them, Kento, were upset at him for not being able to react and blamed him for Ryo and Sage being taken away as a result. Cye was overwhelmed and exhausted, feeling as if there was just no way to win. He finally lost his cool, punched Kento and ran away. The water had been held back for too long and the dam broke.

It was his meeting with White and Black Blaze later which made Cye realize that, as bad as the situation might be, he still had to do all he could. Even if the fighting never stopped, he still wanted to help his friends and it would cause him more pain to try to avoid the battles than to deal with them, plus he wouldn't have to stand on his own. Thus the Ronin Warriors were reunited and once again were victorious through their combined power.
